James Grant

James Jimmie Grant, Jr. 69, of the Oaks Plantation of St. Helena Island and husband of Willie Mae Gregory Grant, died Sunday, April 8, 2012, at the Roper St. Francis Hospital, Charleston.

Funeral services for Mr. Grant will be held at 10:00 AM Friday at Bethesda Christian Fellowship, St. Helena Island. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery. There will be no viewing after the eulogy.  Public Viewing Thursday,  from 3 to 5:00 PM in the Joseph M. Wright Memorial Chapel of Marshel's Wright-Donaldson.

Wake services for Mr. Grant will be held on Thursday from 6:30 PM  to 8 at the Oaks True Holiness. 

James Jimmie Grany, Jr., was born on December 26, 1942 on Oaks Plantation of St Helena Island, South Carolina, to the late James and Delphine Grant.

Jimmie attended St. Helena High School and was a graduate of the class of 1962. He worked as a carpenter, painter and at Wright-Donaldson Funeral Home for many years.

In 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army where served his country honorably. . During his enlistment, he was a Paratrooper with the infamous 101st Screaming Eagles Airborne Infantry Division. He served his country in the Viet Nam War and received numerous medals and awards to include the National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Viet Nam Campaign Medal w/device 60 and the Parachute Badge. Jimmie was a disabled veteran and made the best of his life under those circumstances.

Jimmie attended and was baptized at the Oaks True Holiness Church. He really loved reading his bible and you could find him any day under a tree doing just that. Jimmie loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was united in holy matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Willie Mae Gregory in 1963. From this union six children were born.

In addition to his parents, Jimmie was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Eddie and Sylvester and two sisters Earlene and Catherine.

Jimmie leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife Willie Mae; his children, Kenneth (Lynn), Vanessa(Robert), Jackie and Cynthia all of St. Helena Island, Fitzgerald(Jennifer) and Tonya both of Sioux City, IA; 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Sara Bush of Bluffton, SC, Shirley Washington of Charlotte, NC, Dorothy Hartley of St. Helena, Veronica Ferrell(John) of Fort Dorchester, MD Nelson Grant of St. Helena, SC, Alva Gadson of Walterboro, SC, Ronald (Theresa) and Arnold and Doretha Grant all of St. Helena; sisters-in-law, Melvina Earnestine Grant of Lady's Island, Barbara Brown of Savannah, GA, Ethel Gore of Atlanta, GA, Bernice Smalls of Raleigh, NC and Hazel Porter ( Rev. John) of St. Helena Island; brothers-in-law, William Gregory, Jr. (Yolanda) and Arnold Gregory (Margie) both of St. Helena Island; one aunt, Beatrice Simmons and one aunt-in-law, Beulah Glover of St. Helena Island; two uncles-in-law, Wendell Gregory and Benjamin Glover (Bertha) both of St. Helena Island; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
