Dea. Martin J. York, 89, of Burton and widower of Evelyn York, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services for Dea. York will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the Second Jordan Baptist Church, Burton. Burial will follow in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
Deacon Martin York, son of the late Lorraine Tinsley and Martin York, Sr., was born on August 10, 1922 in Alton, Texas.
His formal education was attained at Booker T. Washington High School. He did further studies at Prairie View A & M College in Bryant, Texas. He resided in New York City for 32 years. While in New York, he was a member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church where she was ordained as a Deacon and served for 8 years.
In 1968, he moved to Beaufort, South Carolina, and became a member of the Second Jordan Baptist Church. He served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, Chairman of the Deacon Board and member of the Male Chorus.
For many years, he was employed by Beaufort County's Roads and Bridges and Sears Roebuck & Company until his retirement in 1992.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn York; two daughters and two sons.
Those left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life, two daughters, Ruth (Charles) Callahan and Ethel (Thomas Myers) Dunbar; three sons: Martin (Linda) York, III of Indianapolis, IN, Alfonza (Shirley) Sheppard and Carl (Shirley) Sheppard both of New York City; 28 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Washington of Beaufort, SC; a host of nieces, nephews and family friends to include his longtime friend, Clinton Douglas; and a very special friend, Rosella Garvin.
