Martin Luther Stewart 44, of Hilton Head Island and son of Arthur and Isabel Stewart, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 as a result of a boating accident in the Broad River.
Funeral Services are being planned for 11:00 AM Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Hilton Head Island.
Martin Luther Stewart Sr., son of Arthur Stewart Sr. and Isabel Miller Stewart, was born May 31, 1968, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
He attended the local public schools of Beaufort County, and the Career of Excellence Academy of Beaufort and Jasper Counties.. Martin grew up in the island community of Stoney, on Jarvis Creek, where he learned to swim, fish, crab, dig for clams and oysters. He could throw a cast net right out of his back door and bring in baskets of a variety of seafood. He loved the life of an outdoorsman and was an adventurer at heart. Martin loved the sea and all of its bounty.
ML, as he was affectionately called by his siblings, relatives, and friends, left the comfort of his parents home as a youngster and traveled to Key West, Florida where he became a professional seaman. He later trawled the Gulf and other seashores making a living and enjoying his profession. A teacher in his own right, ML was taught, by his dad and elder brothers, how to navigate and trawl the water as shrimp fisherman, so that he too, would be able to make a living and provide for himself and his family.
He was a loveable person with a great sense of humor. He was a sharing, caring giving person who supplied his relatives and neighbors with all kinds of seafood and who did not mind sharing whatever he had with others.
On Wednesday, December 26, 2012, God being too wise and too just to be unkind gently closed his eyes and whispered peace be thine.
